GAME-DESIGNER
Maria
Nikolskaia

3+ years of experience in cooperation with small indie teams and solo-development

As a game designer, I've been involved in many projects with a variety of roles, from creating and preparing game documentation (hidden work, but important) to implementing and fine-tuning in-game mechanics (balancing inspiration with a structural approach).

I developed a lot of prototypes, and tested out different game ideas for improving overall playability. I am always looking for opportunities to learn new skills!

My technical background includes Unreal Engine 4 (learning UE 5), Unity, Maya, Python, C#.

Over the past 3 years, I have participated in 5 Game Jams and worked on 19 student projects (solo and with my teammates from university).

My interest in game development is mainly centered on the
Ecology and Nature Related Projects.

List of my key projects:
MOBILE: Tame the Stream (2019)
3D prototype of casual mobile game (based on Unreal Engine 4) with ecological & environmental topic. It is a single player game, where you need to control the water stream runnung down from the top of the mountain down to the sea level.

In this project I was working on:
  • in-game mechanics
  • storyline
  • models
  • UI design

Game Idea: Bring the flow of the stream down to the sea avoiding obstacles and keeping up the water.
As a player you should manage the water stream on its way avoiding all the difficulties (drought, pits etc) and helping to irrigate the soil.

PC: GreenD (2020)
3D low-poly shooter game based on Unreal Engine 4

The Green lizard as the protector of the forest fights against the evil robots who parazited the wild nature. The character can grow a weapon and strike with spikes from his arms or swim underwater to create ambush.

In this project I was working on:
  • level design
  • storyline
  • game design
  • programming in blueprints,
  • character models
  • visual effects.

MOBILE: SunRabbit (2021)
2D mobile casual runner based on Unity.

The sunbeam "rabbit" greens the planet with its warmth and light. Every season of the year, plant growth conditions are changing, as the fickle weather complicates the recovery of the planet. Restore ecological balance on the planet and survive as long as you can.

In this project I was working on:
  • draw art sprites,
  • implement game mechanics,
  • create C# scripts.

Work experience:
GUX RESEARCHER (2023)
  • Lightyear Frontier Game. Along with Senior Researcher, I conducted surveys and playtests to gather user feedback and identify areas for improvement in the Lightyear Frontier game. Evaluated results gave some valuable insights for further development.

PRODUCER (2021 - 2023) - XARINA's PRODUCTIONS
My own indie studio for NEW EverGreen game. I put together and supervised a team of 8 different specialists.
  • Led a team in writing Game Design Documents (GDD), prototyping the first MVP, and overseeing level design process.
  • Collaborated closely with team members, including artists, programmers, and writers, to ensure alignment with project goals and objectives (with Notion).
  • Provided mentorship and guidance to junior team members, fostering their professional growth and development (with Miro as a whiteboard tool).
Personal Experience and Projects:

GAME-DEVELOPER (2018 - 2023)

3D ARTIST (2018 - 2020)
I prefer working in the low-poly technique.
  • 2.5D Puzzle "Foldorial" (DTF Jam 2019 (3rd place). I worked in cooperation with concept artists, following their drawings and sketches, created the low-poly models to fit 2D origami visual effects in 3D environment.
